What is hypnosis?

A comforting thing perhaps, to anyone who is new to hypnosis, is the knowledge that the hypnotic state is a completely natural place to be.

It is a state of deep relaxation allowing the breathing to slow and muscles to let go of any tension. It is not a state of sleep or unconsciousness but a state of altered consciousness. The mind becomes more responsive and open to suggestions than when in the fully conscious state and this is the component which is utilized in order to perform effective therapy. Hypnotic trance has many levels ranging from light to very deep. Therapeutic intervention can be effective with only a medium state.

Everyone enters a light trance for a proportion of every day. When daydreaming or staring out the window thinking about all the possibilities then we are in a light trance already. Almost everyone can be hypnotised to a depth where therapy can work for you.

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven" (Milton).
